The Scottish Government lies at the centre of Scotland’s network of public services and public institutions. It supports Scottish Ministers to exercise the full range of devolved powers and duties provided by the Scotland Act – allocating a budget of approximately £28 billion in 2012-13.
We seek an outstanding candidate for the role of Director of Communications and Ministerial Support, a newly created role within the Strategy and External Affairs Directorate. This post offers a unique chance to contribute directly to the Civil Service’s support for the elected Government of the day at an unprecedented period of constitutional and political history for Scotland and will be an excellent career development opportunity.
With a high level of professional credibility, personal resilience and a proven natural flair for stakeholder engagement, you will be responsible for:
- Oversight at a strategic leadership level, of all aspects of Scottish Government communication, both internally and externally, providing support and advice to ensure consistent and professionalmessaging to all external stakeholders within Scotland and beyond
- Providing leadership and management to a team of circa 230 staff delivering private office and communications support to Ministers and others
- Acting in an advisory capacity to support Ministers and senior officials on all aspects of corporate communications and the profile and reputation of the Scottish Government as a civil service organisation
Politically astute with excellent negotiating, influencing and communication skills, you must be able to demonstrate a strong track record of achievement in corporate and external communications at a senior leadership level. Critically your experience must have been gained within a complex and dynamic organisational environment (public or private sector). It is likely that the successful candidate will have an understanding of the roles and relationships of Parliament, Government and the Civil Service in Scotland. Strong strategic vision combined with outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills will be critical to succeed in this role.
